This tagline points to the common threads running through Patrick’s book A Snake on the Heart: History, Mystery, and Truth: The Entangled Journeys of a Biographer and His Nazi Subject and his monographs on Dutch diarist and martyr Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) who was murdered at Auschwitz, and British mystic Wellesley Tudor Pole (1884-1968). Patrick graduated from the University of Victoria’s Honours History Program in 1973 and completed an M.A. in history at York University in 1974. He taught history part-time at Malaspina and North Island Colleges on Vancouver Island prior to starting a 33-year career with the British Columbia Public Service in 1977. A Snake on the Heart is his first book.
